In 1987, two Sisters of Mercy turned to adult literacy after careers in elementary education upon seeing the harsh reality of low-income mothers struggling with illiteracy. At a time when Bridgeport suffered from poverty, ill health, low educational attainment and corruption, the need for literacy education in the city was critical. Mercy Learning Center started with only three students and two tutors, but it now boasts 626 students and 196 tutors in a new spacious, three–story building.
