A victim of polio himself, Franklin Delano Roosevelt envisioned a world free from polio and asked his friend Basil O’Connor to create the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis to this end. To raise money, O’Connor started an annual fundraiser where they asked every child to send a dime to President Roosevelt in the White House to help fight polio. After the invention of the polio vaccine, the foundation changed its name to March of Dimes and shifted its focus to the prevention of birth defects.
