Chicopee is a working class town of about 50,000 residents in Western Massachusetts. Like many of the old mill towns in New England, Chicopee has its share of homeless and underserved citizens fighting to get by in a struggling economy. In 1982, Chicopee developed a food distribution program for senior citizens which, at that time, sent roughly 630,000 pounds of food a year throughout Hampshire County. Today, The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, works by rescuing food that would have gone to waste. The Food Bank currently distributes 7 million pounds of food annually to its 300 member agencies.
