Throughout history, people have relied on the earth for food; however, as America industrialized and grocery stores became more convenient, dependence shifted away from local family farms. Nevertheless, determined families in small towns continue to grow crops to sell at food stands and markets. Unfortunately, weather doesn’t always cooperate, and small farms can be wiped out by drought or torrential rain, leaving families with no crops or income to start over. Fortunately, in 1985, three prominent musicians, Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, and Neil Young, saw this as an important issue and created a group called Farm Aid to bring attention to the destruction of the small-town farm and to encourage farm families.
