In the late 1800s, extravagant feathered hats lined store windows and feather trading was one of the most lucrative businesses of the day. By 1910, people began to see the negligence of the feather industry and feathered hats and clothing had all but disappeared. Recognizing the importance of protecting birds, George Grinnell formed the Audubon Society. Though initially established only for the protection of birds, the Audubon Society moved on to become one of the most well-known conservation groups in the country.
