Henry Bergh was appointed to a diplomatic post at the Russian court of Czar Alexander II by Abraham Lincoln. While in Europe, he first began to witness cruelty to animals and met the Earl of Harrowby, who was also the president of England’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Upon returning to New York, Bergh formed the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals.
